Chicago Marathon 2019: Carbs and Shakeouts
We’re a bit less than two weeks out from the 2019 Chicago Marathon! Even though I had to back out this year, I still want to share the best places to Carbo-Load and all the Shake Out Runs I know about! This will be periodically updated as more groups come forward with details for their Shake Out Runs, so check back! If you’re looking for the SHAKEOUTS, scroll down! We’re starting with the food!
Carb Loading and Celebrating!
Let’s chat food first!
Hilton is going all out this year and several of their hotel restaurants will be hosting pasta dinners before the race and celebrations after!
Starting with River North’s Conrad Chicago, marathon runners can get 20% off food for brunch or dinner for a party of up to six guests Baptiste & Bottle on race day. To get this offer, you must present your race bib. (Additionally, if you’re staying at Conrad Chicago to run the marathon, you can relax with a complimentary 10-minute massage at Baptiste & Bottle from 12 to 2 p.m. You must show a race bib, along with a Conrad Chicago room key or confirmation email.)
Specific deals for those staying at Hilton Hotels are as follows:
Hiltons at McCormick Place guests can show their Hilton key card to receive 10% off pasta dishes at Fatpour Tap Works McCormick . They’re also offering a beer after the race! This offer is valid for the full weekend of the marathon.
Runners staying at Embassy Suites by Hilton Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile get a $12 pasta special at 511 North, which includes cavatelli pasta with a choice of three different sauces: butter, Bolognese or pesto.
Marathon-goers staying at The Rose Hotel Chicago O’Hare, Tapestry Collection by Hilton receive 10 % off any breakfast, lunch or dinner item from the lobby’s restaurant menu. Runners can carb-load with one of the newest menu items — a pappardelle pasta dish with shrimp, tomato ragu, Grana Padano cheese, asparagus and kale. Runners simply need to show their race bib to receive the discount.
Thanks to Hilton for sharing those specials with me!
If you’re local or staying elsewhere, I have a few recos!
Run Crunite Pasta Dinner — My friend Cicely is hosting a pasta dinner uniting running crews/runners of color in town for race weekend on Friday, October 11 at 7pm! The event is $10 and includes pasta, carbs, bottled water, #representyourcrew custom cheer card station with a photobooth, and good vibes! Cicely created FroAthletes to empower and increase Black runners and athletes’ visibility in fitness through “events - resources - inspiration.” It will be co-hosted by aSweatLife and Free Mvmt Shop (1962 North Bissell Street). Tickets can be found here!
Carmine’s — Carmine’s is in my ‘hood (Gold Coast what’s up!) and is a family-style Italian restaurant. Their meatballs are amazing, their pasta is amazing…the entire menu is amazing. If you’re wanting to go here, make sure to make a reservation soon! Their menu can be found here.
Osteria via Stato — Another Italian restaurant, this time in the heart of River North at State and Ontario. I went here recently for a wedding and it was fabulous! Their menu can be found here!
Eataly — This one is a lot of fun, and I recommend it for both before and after the race! They have several restaurants inside all at varying prices and styles. I recommend checking their website to see what you fancy before or after the race!
Nandos — This is my pre race dinner of choice! I go here and get their Mashed Potatoes (with Garlic peri peri sauce) and their hummus with veggies! It’s light but still gets you that carb fix, and it’s easy on the wallet. There are several locations around the city and their website is here!
